I've been attending the retreat since 1993. The food is excellent & plentiful...can't beat the oatmeal! The site is peaceful and the amenities clean & comfortable. Wonderful folks to share the experience with as well! ~

So I've been coming to Retreat most every year since 1990.
Both my parents were alcoholic and criticism of everything I did and didn't do was rampant.
Early on I was helping set up the Agape room. I built a fire in the fireplace. Positive the damper was open I lit the fire. I was wrong. The damper was closed. The fire was roaring up the front of the fireplace to the ceiling. The smoke detectors were screaming. I was positive I'd burned down the cabin - maybe the entire forest.
No way to reach into the fire to open the damper, no water handy. Raced down to my car below the Agape room and grabbed a claw hammer. Lisa C. who was there for the whole mess ran and got a bottle of water. Not enough to put out the fire in the fireplace but enough to pour on my arm and hand while I reached into the flames and fished around with the hammer until I found the grate thingie and pulled it open.
Not then, not later, not ever, did anyone at Retreat say anything critical of me...no sideways remarks, you shoulda - woulda - coulda's, just acceptance. You guys make me cry for happy.
